Music from Mistaken

Music has always been a big part of my life, so it isn’t surprising that I always am writing to music. Below are some songs that inspired various parts of Mistaken. I may not share exactly why each song fits so I don’t give away too much of the story, but if you read the book you might understand them a bit better.

1.       Emotion Sickness by Silverchair- The tone of this song just really  seemed to fit the tone of the prologue. Somewhat abrupt in parts, very emotional, and it gives a sense that things are spiraling out of control.
2.       Paradise by Coldplay- “When she was just a girl, she expected the world, but it flew away in her sleep.” Definitely suits the Dillan we meet in Chapter One.
3.       Ghost By Your Side by Lovedrug- I just felt this suited her  first glimpse of Trey, and the ensuing  bus chase. Also, I LOVE this band.
4.       Sober by Pink- Dillan’s breakdown and ensuing self-medicating. “The quiet scares me cause it screams the truth.”
5.       Miss You Love by Silverchair- I imagine something like this was playing on the radio during the time after the meds and alcohol kicked in. Also another great Silverchair song.
6.       Paint It, Black by The Rolling Stones- Trey finds out his brother is dead/visits his grave-he’s pretty pissed…
7.       Memories Remain & Do Or Die by Dropkick Murphys- Most likely what may have been playing when Dillan elbowed Jamie into the face the day the met.
8.       The Ghost Of You by My Chemical Romance- Dillan’s nightmare and her feelings about everything that was hidden from her about Jamie.
9.       Buried Myself Alive by The Used- The ride out to Dillan’s grandmother’s house.
10.   Blue and Yellow by The Used- Talking about her parents.
11.   All That I’ve Got by The Used-  Hanging out at the stream. Another of my favorite songs.
12.   Take It Away by The Used- Fits Trey’s rage after his conversation with Agent Luciano. Outside he looks calm, on the inside he is probably smashing everything  in his reach.
13.   Don’t Cry by Guns N’ Roses- Definitely is the song playing at the bar.
14.   I think I Smell A Rat by The White Stripes- I can’t really say much about this song. J
15.   Creep (Acoustic) by Radiohead- suits Dillan and Trey’s growing  and very conflicted feelings.
16.   A Martyr For My Love For You by The White Stripes-  Trey’s song to Dillan.  “I could stay awhile, but sooner or later I’ll break your smile.”
17.   Disenchanted by My Chemical Romance- Dillan feeling confused about, well…everything, and missing Trey.
18.   Bulls on Parade by Rage Against The Machine-  Fit very well with Trey’s mother’s death.
19.   Hang ‘Em High by My Chemical Romance-  Trey discovering Dillan is gone and going after her.
20.   If I Ever Leave This World Alive by Flogging Molly- Beautiful song.  “She says I’m okay; I’m alright. Though you have gone from my life. You said that it would; now everything should be alright.” Best sung at a Flogging Molly concert at the top of your lungs with a beer in hand.
21.   Good Life by OneRepublic-  My song for Trey.  If this were a movie, this would fit the ending as the camera slowly zooms up and away.

Book Description:

One year ago, two bullets from a .45 caliber pistol ripped away any hopes Dillan had of a future with her fiancé, Jamie. On the anniversary of Jamie’s death, the appearance of his estranged twin brother, Trey, leaves Dillan wondering what other secrets her prefect fiancé was hiding. When Trey learns of his brother’s death, Dillan takes pity on him and gives him a place to stay.

Trey’s erratic behavior and a series of suspicious phone calls lead Dillan to believe that Trey knows more about the circumstances surrounding Jamie’s death than he’s letting on. With all leads exhausted and Jamie’s murderer still on the loose, Trey is Dillan’s last hope for finding the truth.

Sometimes the truth hurts… but in Dillan’s case it could kill her.

Part VII

The house grew quiet as everyone prepared for bed. Orlando was exhausted and fell asleep within moments of his head hitting the pillow. Until a noise in his bedroom jarred him awake. He sat up looking for what created the noise. At first he didn’t see anything. All appeared to be quiet and in its place. Closing his eyes to sleep he felt the mattress shift to the presence of someone else’s weight, Orlando opened his eyes to find a man standing beside his bed resting his foot on the mattress.           “What?” Orlando asked thinking he must have been dreaming.           An eerie yellow light surrounded the man who peered down upon him. A wicked smile upon his face, “Catching up on your beauty sleep?” the man asked.           Sitting up in his bed to create space between himself and the man, Orlando knew this m...
